The Dilemma of the Week
Several years we purchased a home with a terrible kitchen. As we have two small children we really felt this had to be dealt with immediately. We ordered new cabinets, flooring and counters and that was it. We were in such a hurry we did not plan adequately. Our problem is the kitchen the kitchen is very dark and we have lovely views outside and are not able to take advantage of them. We obviously don't want to redo the kitchen, but would like some suggestions as to what we can do. There is a short double window over the sink and a very small window near the breakfast table. We could break out a wall but this seems excessive as we would have to remove some of the cabinets. We just spent a good deal of money to install and in addition we need the storage." JS in Dallas Interior Options responds: I hate to use the old expression haste makes waste but this is an example. Every one should hold off a bit and set up a plan before investing in their homes. There are two things you can do to help you with both the light and the view. You can enlarge the window opening over your sink, by cutting down the wall to meet the existing counter top and installing a prefab green house in the opening. This will not only give you a view in three directions but by extending the existing counter top with an attractive tile you will increase the apparent size of your kitchen.& Just visualize some wonderful flowering plants in the middle of the winter. The other solution and the choice hinges on which spot has the best view and or light. If the space around the small window can be enlarged near the breakfast table. If this is your choice, cut the window to table height, approximately 30 inches above the floor. Of course if budgets permit you could do both for a really dramatic change. There are several window companies that manufacture these units. ; Check with a local lumber company for advice on the names of manufacturers. |
